Getting to the compost mixture right

To make good compost you need to put a mixture of different types of materials - Greens & Browns.

 

  • Green waste - Sappy, juicy waste will be green in colour. This type of waste rots quickly and turns into a smelly slimy mess on their own as they are low in fibre. Greens are especial though to activate the composting process
  • Brown waste - Tough old dried out brown waste can take ages to rot. High in fibre and low in moisture these materials give structure to the composting and facilitate aeration. The proportion will vary buy generally you can start with a 50/50 ratio and then adjust. If the pile or bin seems dry then add more greens to speed up composting. If the pile seems too wet and smelly add browns. If browns are not available paper or cardboard will also achieve the same results of providing air pockets in the pile.

Cutting the waste to speed things up

Generally speaking any item will compost faster is it is chopped into smaller pieces. This allows organisms to more access to the waste. Cutting up a watermelon peal or placing your weeds under the lawnmower may make a noticeable different in the speed you get ready compost.

Mixing and turning

Getting air into your compost pile is a key element to successful composting. It is recommended to manually aerate your pile at least once or twice a week. In a standing bin this can be done with a fork, hoe or a special compost turner tool. Alternatively an easy way to ensure all the compost pile is being turned is to use a compost tumbler. This system not only makes it much easy to turn and with a hand tool but also ensure full movement of all the waste inside your bin.
